Your first visit, step by step

  1. History and a movement and strength examination, so the cause is identified rather than guessed at
  2. Your pain scored on a 0 to 10 scale on day one, so improvement is a number and not an opinion
  3. A screen for anything that needs a doctor rather than a physiotherapist, which means you leave with a referral instead of a treatment plan

You leave knowing what is wrong, in plain language, whether or not you book anything.

The question worth asking before you book anywhere

Ask what happens in the first appointment. If the answer is a treatment — heat, ultrasound, a massage — you are being sold a session. If the answer is an assessment that ends with someone telling you what they think is causing your pain and how they will measure whether it is improving, you are being offered a plan. The second one is what you want, and it costs you nothing here to find out which you are getting.

Nearest is not the same as right, but it matters more than people admit

Physiotherapy is not one visit. A typical plan runs two or three sessions a week for several weeks, so a clinic twenty minutes further away is an hour of travel you have to find, every week, while you are in pain. That is the single most common reason people stop treatment half way and stay in pain. Choosing somewhere you can actually reach before work or on the way home is a clinical decision, not a lazy one.

What treatment involves

What follows depends entirely on what the assessment finds. Manual therapy, dry needling, shockwave, ultrasound and IFT are all available here, but none of them replaces the exercise plan that keeps the problem from returning. You will be told which you are getting and why before anything starts.

If it does not work, you do not pay
